The science of light

Four wavelengths, each reaching skin at a different depth.

The ION uses LED light at four wavelengths. Depth is the reason there is more than one: light at a longer wavelength travels further into the skin, so each is chosen for a different cosmetic concern. How it works goes through this in more detail.

• 415nm · Blue

  Works at the surface, where blemishes begin. Research supports blue light for the appearance of a clearer-looking complexion.

• 660nm · Red

  Reaches into the dermis. May support the appearance of firmness, the look of fine lines and texture, and the look of an even glow.

• 830nm · Near-infrared

  Reaches deeper layers. May help calm the appearance of redness and support skin’s natural renewal processes.

• 850nm · Deep near-infrared

  The deepest of the four. Designed to complement red light rather than replace it.

What’s in the formulas

The light opens the door. These are what walk through it.

Skin is most receptive in the twenty minutes after a session, and the formulas were built for that window. Below are the actives that do the work, what each one is, and which products it appears in. The complete lists follow further down.

Peptides

• The five-peptide complex Tripeptide-1 · Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7 · Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5 · Hexapeptide-9 · Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4

  Peptides are short chains of amino acids — the same building blocks skin uses for its own structural proteins. Five of them, at different chain lengths, is what makes this a multi-peptide formula rather than a single-peptide one.

  May support the appearance of elasticity and help smooth the look of expression lines.

• Pentapeptide-4 with hydrolyzed collagen Pentapeptide-4 · Hydrolyzed Collagen

  A single, focused peptide paired with collagen broken into fragments small enough to sit on the skin’s surface and hold water there.

  May support the appearance of firmer-looking skin and help soften the look of fine lines. Hydrolyzed collagen is animal-derived.

• Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 Acetyl Hexapeptide-8

  A short peptide used in eye care for the appearance of firmness around the eye, where skin is thinnest.

Hydration and barrier

• Sodium hyaluronate Sodium Hyaluronate

  The salt form of hyaluronic acid, and smaller than the acid itself. Holds water against the skin, helps maintain hydration and supports the moisture barrier.

• Glycerin Glycerin · Glycerol

  A humectant, meaning it draws water toward the skin surface. One of the most studied and best tolerated moisturising ingredients there is — which is why it sits near the top of every one of our lists.

• Allantoin Allantoin

  A skin-conditioning agent long used for comfort on skin that feels dry or tight.

  In: Collagen Renewal Mask and all four eye patches
• Red algae and konjac Chondrus Crispus · Glucomannan · Carrageenan

  These are what make a hydrogel a hydrogel. Seaweed and konjac-root polysaccharides form the flexible, water-heavy sheet that holds a patch or mask against the skin and releases its essence slowly rather than all at once.

Brightening, soothing and antioxidant

• Niacinamide Nicotinamide · Vitamin B3

  May help brighten and even the appearance of skin tone, supports barrier function and helps soothe the look of the skin.

  Used under the eye for the look of puffiness and dark circles.

Every ingredient is evaluated for safety and compatibility before it goes in. You will not find:

• Parabens
• Sulfates (SLS/SLES)
• Synthetic fragrances
• Phthalates
• Formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing agents
• Mineral oil
• Harsh alcohols
• Artificial dyes

We are also cruelty-free — never tested on animals — dermatologist-tested for skin compatibility, and non-comedogenic.

A note on vegan claims. Our eye patches contain collagen and snail secretion filtrate, and the Collagen Renewal Mask contains hydrolyzed collagen. These are animal-derived, so those products are not vegan. We would rather tell you plainly than round up.

Getting the most from it

Light first. Then the formulas, into skin that is ready for them.

1. Cleanse. Start with clean, dry skin.
2. Activate. Use the ION for 10–20 minutes, as directed.
3. Nourish. Follow with the Daily Glow serum, or a Collagen Renewal Mask for a longer sitting.
4. Restore. Finish with your moisturiser — or an eye patch, when you have the moment.
5. Repeat. Three to five times a week is the rhythm this was built around.

Safety and quality

The ION is tested for electrical safety using UL/CE certified components, for light safety at wavelengths and power levels designed for home use, and for material safety against ISO 10993 standards. Every device is tested before it ships. The ION meets or exceeds CE, RoHS and FCC requirements.

Before you start

• Patch-test any new formula on a small area 24 hours before first use.
• Consult a healthcare professional first if you are pregnant, nursing, photosensitive, or taking photosensitising medication.
• Discontinue use if irritation occurs.
• Not for use by children without adult supervision.
• Keep the device away from water during use, and follow the safety instructions supplied with it.
